Turnitin (LTI) (Ultra): 4.2: Marking assignments


Warning: All markers and moderators should read the section Important Information to Avoid Losing Marks and Feedback Data before starting marking and moderation.


When students have submitted their work and you are ready to begin marking:

  1. Log into Blackboard and navigate to the course where the submissions have been made.
  2. Locate the submission point where the submissions have been made. If this is a summative assessment, you will usually find this in the Assessment, submission and feedback
  3. Click on the title of the submission point to enter the Turnitin submission point’s Assignment Inbox. This may take some time to load.
  4. You should see a list of submissions down the left-hand side of the screen. If anonymity is switched on, you will not see student names listed.
  5. If you are marking a particular group of students:
    1. Select the drop-down arrow in the box that reads All Students, expanding a list of Group Sets on the Blackboard course.
    2. You will have been told by administrative or teaching staff which group set to mark.
    3. Hover over the appropriate group set, prompting a list of groups to appear to the right.
    4. Click on the marking group you have been allocated.The group sets and individual groups listed in Turnitin's marking interface.
  6. In the Assignment Inbox you can view:
      1. The student’s name (unless anonymity is switched on) in the Author
      2. The title of the submission in the Title
      3. The submission ID in the Submission ID
      4. The date the submission was made in the Uploaded
      5. Whether or not the submission has been viewed by any marker yet in the Viewed
      6. The grade (if one has been assigned) in the Grade If no grade has been assigned, this will have a pencil icon in it.
      7. The submission’s Similarity Score in the Similarity


    Warning: Turnitin similarity and AI-writing reports are indicative and require review and interpretation. Encountering similarity, flagged content, or material suspected to be AI-generated does not automatically evidence academic misconduct without interpretation. Initial marks should be provided based on intellectual content with any concerns around academic misconduct escalated through designated channels in your school.
      1. Any flags that have been attributed to the submission in the Flags
      2. An option to interact with a context menu pertaining to each submission via the icon in the Options
  1. To access, review and mark a student’s submission, click on the title of the paper in the Title This will open the work in a pop-out window called the Feedback Studio.
  2. Once within the Feedback Studio, you can use the marking tools (detailed in the section Marking and Feedback Tools) to add feedback and notes. Below is a basic introduction to adding marks and feedback:
    1. To enter a mark:
      1. If you are not using a grading rubric, enter a mark by clicking on the icon in the top right of the screen.A view of the Turnitin marking interface showing the two "--" where you can enter a mark.
      2. If you are using a rubric, click on the Rubric/Form button to access the grading rubric/form and enter a mark against its criteria.Turnitin's rubric button
    2. To enter feedback, click the Feedback Summary button and type your feedback into the Text CommentTurnitin's feedback summary button
    3. To enter comments in the student’s submission, left-click anywhere within the student’s work and select the speech bubble to add a comment. This will open a typing interface where you can add a comment.The pop-up interface in Turnitin that appears when you right-click within the students document. The middle option is the speech bubble.
  3. Once you have finished adding marks and feedback for the student, you should close the window. This will save the marks and feedback you have entered. You should not attempt to navigate between students’ work from within this window.



Warning: Anonymous moderation can only be completed prior to the Feedback Release Date. Once the Feedback Release Date has passed, anonymity will be automatically lifted.
  1. Open the appropriate Blackboard course and navigate to the submission point. This will normally be located in the Assessment, submission and feedback
  2. Once you have found the submission point, click on its title to enter Turnitin’s Assignment Inbox. This may take a few moments to load. In the Assignment Inbox you can view:
    1. The student’s name (unless anonymity is switched on) in the Author
    2. The title of the submission in the Title
    3. The submission ID in the Submission ID
    4. The date the submission was made in the Uploaded
    5. Whether or not the submission has been viewed by any marker yet in the Viewed
    6. The grade (if one has been assigned) in the Grade If no grade has been assigned, this will have a pencil icon in it.
    7. The submission’s Similarity Score in the Similarity

  3. Each of these columns can be sorted by clicking on the column header.
  4. To access, review and moderate a student’s submission, click on the title of the paper in the Title This will open the work in a pop-out window called the Feedback Studio.
  5. Once within the Feedback Studio, you can use the marking tools (detailed in the section Marking and Feedback Tools) to add feedback and notes to the student and both review and change the marker’s work. Below is a basic introduction to reviewing marks and feedback:
    1. To change a mark:
      1. If you are not using a grading rubric, change a mark by clicking on the current grade in the top right of the screen.A mark entered into Turnitin. To change the allocated grade, click on the bold text.
      2. If a rubric was used to mark the work, click on the Rubric/Form button to access the grading rubric/form and review the assigned grades. You can then adjust these independently using the sliders.Turnitin's rubric button
    2. To review overall feedback, click the Feedback Summary The overall feedback should then appear in a text box on the right hand side of the screen.Turnitin's feedback summary button To review inline comments and feedback (mark-up), click on the Layers icon and ensure the Grading layer is toggled on. Once this has been activated, all of the mark-up on the student’s work should be visible.
  6. Once you have finished moderating marks and feedback for the student, you should close the window. This will save any changes you have made. You should not attempt to navigate between students’ work from within this window.
