Turnitin (LTI) (Ultra): 3.2: Preparing for extensions and late submissions (one solution)

Warning: There is currently no way to accurately record late submissions and extensions from within Blackboard’s Gradebook when using a Turnitin submission point. Turnitin submission points do not allow for the transfer of penalty grades to SITS. It is currently recommended that an independent record of lates and extensions (e.g. in Excel) is kept for all students when using Turnitin submission points.

Warning: The below process is one method for documenting and recording late submissions and extensions. Please check local workflows before following this guidance.

  1. When setting up the initial submission point, enable late submissions (as described in the Setup section of this guidance). All submissions made to this point after the Due Date will then be marked “Late” in the Turnitin interface, but this will not be transferred to Blackboard’s Gradebook.
  2. Prepare a further submission point, following the instructions in the Setup section of this guidance but with the following differences:
    1. Call the submission point “[Assignment Name] Extensions ONLY”.
    2. Give the submission point a start date/time that is the same as the due date of the initial submission point.
    3. Set the Due Date for the longest possible extended submission time.
    4. Set all other conditions on this additional submission point to match those on the initial submission point.
    5. Click Submit. You will be returned to the Blackboard course’s Course Content The Turnitin submission point you have produced should now be visible to you.
  3. Navigate to Groups from the top menu in Blackboard.
  4. Click the New Group Set option in the top right corner of the screen.
  5. Call the new group set “[Assignment name] Extension Management”.
  6. In the Group students option box, select Create custom groups to manually choose how many groups to produce and which students you assign.
  7. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and click the + icon to create a new group.
  8. The new group will automatically be called “New Group 1”. Click on this title to change it, calling it “Extensions”.
  9. Ensure the group remains hidden from students.
  10. Click Save.
  11. Return to the submission point you have just created (the one called “[Assignment Name] Extensions”).
  12. Click on the Date/time marker on the submission point, next to where it reads Release conditions. This will open a new menu of options on the right-hand side of the screen.
  13. In the new menu, change the Select Members option from All members to Specific members or groups. This will open some additional options:
    1. Click on the drop-down arrow in the Groups option and scroll through the list until you locate the group set and group you have just created. Once you find the group, click on it to select it.
  14. Click Save.

NOTE: You will need to have sent and received a column from eVision to complete the following steps. This also assumes you have already added the initial submission point to the column from eVision. You do not need to have completed this work in order for students to begin submitting work.

  1. Navigate to the Gradebook.
  2. Locate the column sent from eVision and click on its title to enter its configuration.
  3. Select Calculation Details from the top-left of the screen, taking you to a new interface.
  4. Click on the drop-down arrow on the Total rule and scroll through the list of coursework to locate the Turnitin submission point you have created for extensions. Click on the checkbox next to it. This will add the name of that submission point alongside the initial submission point to the rule and turn the checkbox green.
  5. Select
  6. Click on the pink x mark in the top-left of the screen to return to the Gradebook.

  • Once extension requests have been received, students with extensions should be added to the “Extensions” group. To do this:
  1. In the Blackboard course, navigate to Groups from the top menu.
  2. Locate the “[Assignment Name] Extension Management” group set and click on it to enter.
  3. Either:
    1. Click on the icon next to a student’s name and select the “Extensions” group to add them.
    2. Click on several students, highlighting their details in black, then click on the icon next to a student’s name and select the “Extensions” group to add all of the highlighted students.
  4. Click Save.
  • Students with extensions should be instructed to submit to the extension submission point only so that they avoid Late markers in Turnitin.
  • Students will be able to continue to submit to the original submission point even after five working days have passed, meaning they could submit work so late that it would no longer receive a grade. To prevent this, you could manually hide the submission point after five days, but you must then make the submission point available again to permit students to see their marks and feedback.
  • Students with an extension will be able to submit work up to the latest possible submission deadline irrespective of their individual extension period. These submissions will not be marked late, and so the date/time of each student submission will need to be checked. An alternative method could be to provide one submission point for each possible extension deadline, but this could be complex for both students and administrators.
